The United Nations Framework Convention of Climate Change, born from the Rio Earth Summit, came into force in 1994 and has been ratified by 192 countries. Another key document born of the Earth Summit is the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
The UNFCCC created the Kyoto Protocol, an international agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which came into force in February 2005.
The next meeting of the Conference of Parties (COP14) to the Protocol will be held in Poznań, Poland from 1-12 December 2008. The Poznań talks come midway between the Bali talks -- which produced a road map for the post-Kyoto cooperative framework -- and the Copenhagen Climate talks, which will conclude the negotiations begun in Bali.
