Garrett, famously a member of political rock band Midnight Oil, has been a vocal critic of asbestos mining, uranium mining, the military (especially pine gap), and nuclear weapons.

Garrett voted and lobbied against dumping the ALP's Three mine policy, but was finally outvoted, and now tows the party line in support of expanding australia's uranium mining industry[1] . In the lead up to the federal election, Garrett expressed support for clean coal.

Since coming in to power, Garrett has:
- Extended licenses to fish southern blue fin tuna, an endangered species[2]
- Ruled out a plastic bag levy, although still committed to phasing out plastic bags, starting from late 2008[3]
