A nutrient is a substance that an organism requires for growth that it must take in from its environment. Nutrients can be minerals and mineral compounds or organic compounds, such as vitamins. Nutrients are one limiting factor with growth, the other is energy (water and air can be considered nutrients).

All organisms need nutrients at some level, most need a balance of a large number differing minerals.
