From Envirowiki

Nodes are basically meeting points of various issues, and serve as a way of organising things to make them easy to access.

Envirowiki's nodes operate in a similar way to wikipedia's portals - as a starting point for a category, from which other pages are linked, and basic information is given. Nodes shouldn't really contain stand alone information, but link to it in article pages instead.
