Fossil fuel is an umbrella term for any fuel made from semi-decomposed organic material that has been under high pressure for a long time. usually this happens when trees or sealife is crushed under mudslides or mass siltation from flooding. Fossil fuel is the major source of anthropogenic greenhouse gasses, which cause climate change.
Coal, oil, and gas are examples of fossil fuels. These non-renewable (or at least very slowly renewable) resources were formed during the Carboniferous Period, part of the Paleozoic Era. Their use makes up 90% of the world’s energy. The burning of fossil fuels has not only contributed to air pollution on a national scale but has altered the global climate.
[edit] 1 types of fossil fuel
types of fossil fuel are varied, and depend upon the structure of the organic material to begin with, as well as the stresses the material is put under whiole underground. the main types are:
- coal, compressed carbon from trees
- oil and its derivatives (ie. petrol and diesel), which are usually formed from crustaceans and other small sealife
- pitch and bitumen
