Contents

[edit] 1 What to bring

  • Bring a bicycle, helmet, & lights
  • Flags, banners, signs, drums, trumpets, horns, costumes, anything to make us more visible and loud.
  • Skateboards, Rollerblades, and Scooters are also acceptable.

[edit] 2 Why Critical Mass?

Critical Mass is a fun, positive, free 'push-bike parade' to promote cycling's many virtues:

  • Preservation of environment not more highways, roads, land clearing, dams, mines
  • No climate changing fossil fuels
  • Peace not wars for oil
  • Sustainability not peak oil chaos
  • We don't block traffic, we ARE traffic!
  • Love learning to cycle safer and to bypass speeding car culture carnage
  • Effective communities not Urban Sprawl
  • Cheap transport not multinational greed
  • Health & fitness not sedentary obesity
  • Clean air not toxic exhaust fumes
  • Cycling fun not stressful road rage

It's the one time each month when people unite in celebration & ride in a large group to assert our right to ride on the road.

[edit] 3 Current Bike Issues

Why play Russian Roulette with opening car doors? A big “Bike Lane Too Narrow” banner shows motorists one reason why we are parading safely, taking up a whole lane.

We might do some laps around roundabouts, or petrol bowsers, or laugh at the cost of fuel

[edit] 4 World Naked Bike Ride

Similar Critical Mass events have sprung up under the "World Naked Bike Ride" banner. Not to be confused with Critical Mass, but their protest themes are basically the same: Co-endorsed Free Fun Bike Celebration rides: Bare as much skin as you dare & bodypaint: Note nakedness not compulsory but FUN is!!
