Conservation

From Envirowiki

Jump to: navigation, search

Conservation is the act of saving an area of an ecosystem in its natural state for later use by humans, for either renewable resources, or aesthetic pleasures. This is as opposed to preservation, in which the area is saved for its own sake, and is sometimes locked up and human entry restricted.

Reasons for conserving a place include for it's resources, such as timber, food, or fresh water (watershed lockups), as a source of scientific knowledge, as wildlife habitat, and for touristic purposes, such as bush-walking, or camping.

The conservation movement has a history extending back over a hundred years of agitating for parks and reserves. The first national park in the world was in Sydney, Australia[reference needed].
