Community conserved areas

From Envirowiki

Jump to: navigation, search

Community conserved areas (CCA's) are landscapes/ecosystems that are voluntarily conserved by Indigenous, local and mobile communities for their biodiversity values, ecosystem services and or cultural values.

They are an important alternative to official Protected Areas, in that less conflict between local people and conservation may occur. They share the common goal of sustainable livelihoods and help to retain customary land practices and culture.

See the CEESP theme under the IUCN for more information: http://www.iucn.org/themes/ceesp/CCA.htm
