There are 6 coalfields in NSW:
- Hunter Coalfield
- Newcastle Coalfield
- Gunnedah Coalfield
- Western Coalfield
- Southern Coalfield
[edit] Currently operating mines
- Mt Arthur
- Rixs Creek
- Ravensworth, Near Muswellbrook, Xstrata.
- Ravensworth West extension approved February 2006. 1.5 Mtpa of coal for six years.
- Tarrawonga coal project. commenced in mid 2006. 1.5 Mtpa.
- Boggabri Coal. Idemitsu. Open cut mining commenced 2006. 1.5 Mtpa of semi-soft coking and thermal coal. Potential to increase output to 5 Mtpa.
- Newpac No.1 colliery, Resource Pacific. 0.8 Mtpa to 4 Mtpa, Longwall.

- Abel underground mine, approved June 2007. 4.5 Mtpa of run-of-mine coal.
- Anvil Hill, Near Muswellbrook. Centennial Coal. 10.5 Mtpa of thermal coal. Approved June 2007. Sold to Xstrata, 2007.
- Wilpinjong coal mine project near Mudgee. Peabody (bought out Excel Coal). Approved 2006.
- Pine Dale coal mine proposal near Lithgow.

- Belmont open cut coal mine proposal, 25km north of Gunnedah. Whitehaven Coal Mining. 1.5 Mtpa of run-of-mine coal.
- Caroona Coal Proposal, BHP Billiton. Near Gunnedah.
- Sunnyside coal project, 15 km west of Gunnedah. Namoi Mining. 1 Mtpa.
- Moolarben coal mine proposal near Mudgee. 10 Mtpa.
- Narrabri Coal, underground coal mine 20 km southeast of Narrabri. 2.5 Mtpa of run-of-mine.
- Wallarah No.2 project, longwall west of Wyong. Kores Australia. Up to 5 Mt of run-of-mine coal for around 30 years. Last remaining major coal resource deposit in the lower Hunter/Newcastle area.
